The information on this page is useful for consumers, patients, and health professionals. It is principally aimed to provide consumer oriented level information. The Bird Library provides these links as a gateway to consumer friendly information and maintains that any health related questions should be directed to a qualified health professional.

Primary Consumer Resources

The Robert M. Bird Library has compiled a list of resources that provide consumer oriented information as well as links to other reputable consumer sites. Below is a list of our preferred consumer websites.

Medline Plus

  • Medline Plus is a government sponsored program that allows consumers to search for free to find authoritative medical information. It offers access to encyclopedias, academic articles, tutorials, and more.
  • OK Health Connection

  • The Robert M. Bird Health Sciences Library has partnered with vendors and Oklahoma health organizations to provide electronic resources to health care professionals in the state of Oklahoma. Databases that have been licensed by The Oklahoma Health Sciences Library Consortium and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries are being made available. Open-access (free) databases and journals are offered through this interface as well.

    Centers for Disease Control

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a government organization whose goal is to offer information and tools people and communities can use to keep themselves healthy and safe. They offer information for how to be healthy, prevent diseases, prepare for disasters and prevent injuries.
  • FamilyDoctor

  • Familydoctor is a website from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). It offers information about the symptoms of medical conditions. It also offers nutritional information, quizzes and other interactive information for anyone to use to learn more about a condition.
  • HealthFinder

  • This website was developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help consumers find valuable health information. When you do a search it links to over a thousand other websites.
  • KidsHealth

  • "KidsHealth is the largest and most-visited site on the Web providing doctor-approved health information about children from before birth through adolescence. Created by The Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media, the award-winning KidsHealth provides families with accurate, up-to-date, and jargon-free health information they can use."
  • Mayo Clinic

  • The Mayo Clinic gives information from their more than 3,000 medical experts and researchers through this site. They offer current information and tools to help people learn more about their medical conditions.
  • MEDEM

  • "Selected one of the top ten most useful websites by the Medical Library Association, our Medical Library provides patients with reliable health care information from introductory to advanced texts."
  • National Cancer Institute

  • "The National Cancer Institute coordinates the National Cancer Program, which conducts and supports research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs with respect to the cause, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cancer, rehabilitation from cancer, and the continuing care of cancer patients and the families of cancer patients."
  • NIH Senior Health

  • This is a website from the National Institutes of Health focusing on seniors and their families. It offers health information through a variety of navigation tools like large text, text read aloud, and other accomodations for users of the site.
  • World Health Organization

  • The World Health Organization is a branch of the United Nations that provides leadership on health issues, monitors health trends, offers health aid to deprived countries, and set norms for health regulations.
